Different types of abdominoplasty

At MOOI Clinic, we offer several types of tummy tuck procedures that tighten the abdomen. An abdominoplasty is also known as a tummy tuck. The plastic surgeon is happy to consult with you about the best option. Every person is unique so there are different possibilities.

Mini abdominoplasty

In a mini abdominoplasty, the excess skin below the navel is removed. The navel itself remains in place. Not everyone is eligible for a mini tummy tuck because there may only be a limited amount of skin. The scar in a mini tummy tuck will sit as low as possible so that the scar falls within the underwear line. This surgery can be done during day hospitalization. Read more about the mini tummy tuck here.

Abdominoplasty with muscle correction and navel relocation

When there is excess flabby skin and also too much fatty tissue, a tummy tuck with the relocation of the navel can be a solution. In this operation, we remove the sagging skin under the navel and reattach the navel. During this procedure, the abdominal muscle can be corrected again if this muscle has started to sag too much due to pregnancy or weight gain, for example. The scar will sit as low as possible so that the scar falls within the underwear line. There will also be a scar at the navel. After surgery, you usually stay in the hospital overnight.

If there is still excess fatty tissue in the flanks or above the navel, for example, it can be removed through liposuction. There are no additional scars because they fall into the surgical area.

Abdominoplasty with Fleur-de-lis

In the Fleur-de-lis surgical technique, the entire abdominal wall is corrected horizontally and vertically. In the above abdominoplasties, excess skin is removed mainly in a horizontal direction. During Fleur-de-lis surgery, the skin above the navel is also corrected vertically. The navel is also sutured in a new place. This surgical technique is mainly used for people who have lost an extreme amount of weight and have a lot of excess skin. In addition to the low horizontal scar on the abdomen, there is also a vertical scar in the middle of the abdomen. After this surgery, you will stay in the hospital for at least one night.

The tummy tuck

All abdominoplasties, from mini to fleur-de-lis, are done under anesthesia (or general anesthesia) so you won’t feel a thing. The anesthesiologist will put you under anesthesia in the OR. In an extensive abdominoplasty, the abdominal skin with fatty tissue is completely detached from the abdominal wall. Then all excess skin and/or fat is removed. The abdominal skin is stretched downward and reattached. A new opening is made in front of the navel. Excess fat in the flanks or above the navel can be removed with liposuction.

After a mini abdominoplasty, with or without liposuction, you can usually go home the same day. After a more extensive abdominoplasty, you’ll stay one to two nights in the hospital.

Aftercare and recovery

Before surgery, you’ll receive detailed post-operative and recovery instructions from us. It is important for your own recovery that you follow these carefully. You usually stay in the hospital for one night. If all goes well and the plastic surgeon completes the initial checkup, you may go home. You may not drive yourself so you need to plan in advance how you will get home.

You may take some afterpain, especially if the abdominal muscles are tightened. You’ll need to wear a compression garment around your abdomen day and night for six weeks after surgery. This stops swelling and fluid accumulation. Depending on the surgery, drains are sometimes placed to drain wound fluid. These are removed after a few days. You may begin carefully walking short distances in a slightly hunched position starting on the third day.

After a tummy tuck, you can return to light activities after two weeks. For the first two weeks, you should absolutely not lift or do any physically strenuous work. You may possibly walk short distances and sedentary work is allowed. After six weeks, you’re usually fully recovered and can begin lightly exercising.

Risks

As with any procedure, there is a chance of bleeding, infection or impaired wound healing with a tummy tuck. This is usually not serious and easily treated.
A tummy tuck creates a numb spot below the navel. Usually the area between the navel and the scar remains numb. This numb area does get smaller and smaller. Most people are not bothered by this. Any small folds in the skin of the lower abdomen disappear gradually over time.

Scar recovery can never be completely predicted. The appearance of thick and lumpy scars, also called scar hypertrophy, can occur. Sometimes a scar correction can provide improvement after a year.

Fat necrosis, the death of fat under the skin, may occur. This is especially common in clients with high body weight. In some cases, this can lead to infection and opening of the wound. Drainage and administration of antibiotics may also be necessary.

QUIT SMOKING

We advise all our clients to quit smoking around the time of treatment. The same applies to the use of nicotine patches and gum. Smoking not only makes you less MOOI on the outside, but also on the inside. If you smoke, you have a higher risk of complications such as poor wound healing, skin shedding or respiratory problems with general anesthesia. In addition, smoking has a detrimental effect on the ingrowth of fat.
