Giving your belly a more beautiful shape again.
When you start looking into a tummy tuck, you quickly come across several terms. Tummy tuck, mini tummy tuck or a Fleur-de-lis tummy tuck. One thing all people have in common is excess flabby skin near their abdomen. At MOOI clinic, we offer several types of tummy tuck procedures that tighten the abdomen. We’d like to tell you more about the fleur-de-lis operation. During a consultation with the plastic surgeon in our private clinic located in Maastricht, we’re happy to talk to you more about whether this procedure is also the best solution for you.
What is a Fleur-de-lis tummy tuck?
Fleur-de-lis is a surgical technique, where your entire abdominal wall is corrected horizontally and vertically. It is the most extensive abdominoplasty and is also called “the anchor,” because of the recognizable scar you’re left with after surgery. When there is a lot of fat and excess skin, a tummy tuck where only a horizontal incision is made is not enough to get a beautiful result. With a Fleur-de-lis tummy tuck, a second (vertical) incision is also made to restore the contours of the body to a beautiful appearance.
When to have Fleur-de-lis surgery?
A tummy tuck using Fleur-de-lis is often needed when you have lost extreme weight. A strict diet, gastric banding, gastric bypass or stomach reduction can help you lose a tremendous amount of weight which is a wonderful achievement! But although you feel fitter and live healthier, the contours of your new body are not visible due to excess skin.
One disadvantage of fleur-de-lis surgery is that the scar is no longer hidden under the underwear as is the goal with a tummy tuck. But on the other hand, the contours of the body are visible again!
Pregnancy can also cause the abdominal skin to be extremely stretched and the abdominal muscles to be permanently sagging. After pregnancy, normal abdominoplasty (possibly with liposuction) and sometimes Fleur-de-lis is sufficient.
If you have a lot of excess skin around your abdomen, you can undergo a tummy tuck at MOOI Clinic for this. Check in advance if this surgery is covered by your health insurance company. If you are reimbursed for treatment, we’re happy to refer you to the hospital. MOOI Clinic only performs procedures for uninsured care.

The fleur-de-lis tummy tuck
The surgery is done under anesthesia (or general anesthesia) so you won’t feel anything. The anesthesiologist will put you under anesthesia in the OR. Two incisions are made: one in the middle, from your sternum to your pubic bone, and the second horizontally from hip to hip. The abdominal skin with fatty tissue is completely detached from the abdominal wall. Then all excess skin and/or fat is removed. If your abdominal muscles are loose or apart (diastasis), your abdominal muscles will also be corrected. The abdominal tissue and skin are pulled from the flanks to the center and reattached. This is how you regain a waistline. Your navel is repositioned and given an opening on the vertical incision.
After a more extensive abdominoplasty, you will stay one to two nights in the hospital.
Aftercare and recovery
Before surgery, you’ll receive detailed post-operative and recovery instructions from us. It is important for your own recovery that you follow these carefully. You usually stay in the hospital for one night. If all goes well and the plastic surgeon completes the initial checkup, you may go home. You may not drive yourself so you need to plan in advance how you will get home.
You may have some afterpain, especially if the abdominal muscles are tightened. You’ll need to wear a compression garment around your abdomen day and night for six weeks after surgery. This stops swelling and fluid accumulation. Depending on the surgery, drains are sometimes placed to drain wound fluid. These are removed after a few days. You may begin carefully walking short distances in a slightly hunched position starting on the third day.
After a tummy tuck, you can return to light activities after two weeks. For the first two weeks, you should absolutely not lift or do any physically strenuous work. You may possibly walk short distances and sedentary work is allowed. After six weeks, you’re usually fully recovered and can begin lightly exercising.

Risks
As with any procedure, there is a chance of bleeding, infection or impaired wound healing with a tummy tuck. This is usually not serious and easily treated.
A tummy tuck creates a numb spot below the navel. Usually the area between the navel and the scar remains numb. This numb area does get smaller and smaller. Most people are not bothered by this. Any small folds in the skin of the lower abdomen disappear gradually over time.
Scar recovery can never be completely predicted. The appearance of thick and lumpy scars, also called scar hypertrophy, can occur. Sometimes a scar correction can provide improvement after a year.
Fat necrosis, the death of fat under the skin, may occur. This is especially common in clients with high body weight. In some cases, this can lead to infection and opening of the wound. Drainage and administration of antibiotics may also be necessary.
QUIT SMOKING
We advise all our clients to quit smoking around the time of treatment. The same applies to the use of nicotine patches and gum. Smoking not only makes you less MOOI on the outside, but also on the inside. If you smoke, you have a higher risk of complications such as poor wound healing, skin shedding or respiratory problems with general anesthesia. In addition, smoking has a detrimental effect on the ingrowth of fat.
