As you consider a neck lift, we’d like to tell you what your options are and what steps you can take. During a consultation with a plastic surgeon at our private clinic located in Maastricht, we’ll provide you with all the necessary information so you can make an informed decision.
When to have a neck lift?
As we age, the skin and the deeper underlying structures in the neck can begin to sag and droop. The loss of skin elasticity plays a role here, and gravity also plays its part. People often pay a lot of attention to their face, but often forget about their neck. When the skin on your neck looks “old” you may find it distracting, especially if it makes you look older than you really are.
A neck lift is best suited for people with isolated excess skin and/or fat on the neck.
Types of neck lifts
There are several ways to make your neck more beautiful. Sometimes there is only sagging skin and sometimes the deeper underlying structures need correction. Depending on your neck, skin and concerns, we’ll advise you on the best solution.
Double chin removal by liposuction
Many people confuse a neck lift with the removal of a double chin. A double chin involves the accumulation of fat under your chin, giving you a “double chin”. Your double chin can often be addressed by using liposuction. It is best to discuss your concerns with the plastic surgeon during a consultation. The doctor will advise you on which treatment methods are possible for you.

The consultation from A to Z
You come to MOOI Clinic in Maastricht to discuss your neck lift. During the consultation, you’ll speak with the plastic surgeon who will actually treat you. Together, you’ll discuss your concerns in front of a mirror so that the plastic surgeon can already give you an idea of what is possible and what you can expect. The advantages and disadvantages of the various techniques will be discussed with you as well, and you’ll also receive information about risks and the pre- and post-operative care.
After the consultation, you’ll be up to date on everything regarding your future neck lift. You’ll receive our honest advice on the expected results, risks, recovery and exact costs. Today we also take pictures for your file.
An initial consultation involves a €50 consultation fee, which will be deducted from the treatment price.
The neck lift
On the day of treatment, we first take before photos for your records. A neck lift takes place under general anesthesia so you won’t feel a thing. The area to be operated on is first marked off and then disinfected and anesthetized. Depending on the concerns you have, different surgical techniques can be performed. For example, perhaps only tightening of the skin is needed, or perhaps deeper structures also need to be tightened. Tightening deeper structures involves a small incision under the chin, where the skin is detached from the neck muscle. This scar is barely visible once healed. The neck muscle is tightened and sutured in place. In people with a lot of excess skin and/or fat, we also remove extra skin and fat from the neck by combining this procedure with liposuction of the neck.
Sometimes it’s also advisable to treat the skin with a chemical peel. The scar may be just below the chin or behind the ear or both, depending on the procedure.
If all goes well and you feel good then you can go home immediately after the treatment. You’re not allowed to drive yourself, so arrange in advance how you will get home safely. Prior to your surgery, you’re well informed about our aftercare and recovery instructions.
Recovery and aftercare
Before the procedure, you’ll receive detailed post-operative instructions from us. It’s important for your own recovery that you follow these carefully. After surgery, you’ll receive a compression bandage to reduce swelling. You’ll also be given pain medication to ease the pain immediately after surgery. Your neck may be swollen and blue for the first two weeks. Use a cold pack regularly for relief and to reduce swelling. After about two weeks, you’ll come to the clinic for a check-up and we’ll remove the stitches.
Most people take at least two weeks off from work, but depending on the type of work you do, you may need up to 4 weeks. After 6 to 12 weeks, you’re usually fully recovered. Scars typically mature after 1 year and at this point, the color and thickness of the scar will likely remain. Protect the scar from the sun during this period. After 3 months, you come to MOOI Clinic for a final check-up.

Risks
As with any surgery, there is a chance of bleeding, infection or impaired wound healing. This is usually not serious and easily treated. Read more about the possible risks and complications of plastic surgery here.
QUIT SMOKING
We advise all our clients to quit smoking around the time of treatment. The same applies to the use of nicotine patches and gum. Smoking not only makes you less MOOI on the outside, but also on the inside. If you smoke, you have a higher risk of complications such as poor wound healing, skin shedding or respiratory problems with general anesthesia.

After the consultation with the plastic surgeon, you’ll know exactly what your neck lift will cost.
Please note that it’s not possible to claim expenses for treatments from health insurance. MOOI only performs procedures for uninsured care.
If you do want to qualify for reimbursement, we’re happy to refer you to one of our hospitals. For this you need a referral from the family doctor. We recommend consulting the terms and conditions of your health insurance policy.
