Migraine / tension headache treatment with Botox

If you suffer from migraines, you probably know how difficult it can be to deal with them. Medications and lifestyle changes often don’t help enough to reduce migraine attacks and prevent massive headaches. Fortunately, Botox can be a solution. Originally developed to reduce wrinkles, Botox is now also used to treat migraines. As you consider doing something about migraines, we’d like to tell you what your options are and what steps you can take. During a consultation with a plastic surgeon at our private clinic located in Maastricht, we’ll provide you with all the necessary information so you can make an informed decision.

What is the difference between tension headaches and migraines?

Tension headaches and migraines are two different types of headaches with different symptoms and causes. With tension headaches, the pain usually feels like constant pressure or tension on both sides of the head, or just in the middle of your head between your eyebrows. The pain is often mild to moderate and usually does not cause nausea or vomiting. Tension headaches can last from a few hours to a few days and are well treated with painkillers and relaxation exercises. Migraines are usually more intense and throbbing in nature and often occur on one side of the head. Migraines are often accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and hypersensitivity to light, sound and smells. During a migraine attack, a normal painkiller is not enough to relieve the headache. Your symptoms can sometimes last for days.

It’s important to consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment of both tension headaches and migraines, as treatment options may vary depending on the specific symptoms and causes.

When to have migraine/tension headaches treated with botox?

If you suffer from frequent and intense tension headaches or migraine attacks, it can hinder you in your daily life and significantly affect your well-being. For example, it may be difficult to go to work, engage in social activities, or even perform daily tasks. A migraine attack brings considerable pain and discomfort, and not everyone understands this. You may have also already tried many things to reduce your migraine attacks, but nothing seems to help. Botox may be a good option to consider. Botox can also be used preventively so that you’re less likely to get migraines in the future.

Reducing Migraines with Botox

If you’re wondering how Botox can help treat migraines, it’s important to know that migraines are often associated with muscle tension in the head and neck. This can lead to pain and discomfort during a migraine attack. Injecting Botox into certain muscles of the head and neck can reduce the tension in these muscles and block the signals that can cause pain.

This can help reduce the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks. Because Botox works by relaxing muscles, it can also help relax blood vessels and improve blood flow. This, in turn, can also help reduce migraine attacks.

It’s important to remember that Botox is not suitable for everyone and its use should be evaluated by a qualified physician. It’s also good to know that migraines cannot be cured with Botox.

Botox® or Bocouture®.

At MOOI Clinic, we work with two different brands of muscle relaxants: Botox® and Bocouture®. Botox® is the well-known brand of Allergan. Bocouture® is a new, purified form of Botulinum toxin. During a consultation, we will talk to you about both brands and help you make the right choice.

Consultation and treatment

During the consultation, the doctor will hear your symptoms and advise you what may be an appropriate treatment option for you to reduce migraines. Keep in mind that not all people can be treated and/or benefit from Botox migraine treatment. Often treatment can be done immediately after the consultation.

In Botox treatment, the substance is injected into the muscles with a very thin needle. It’s very important that a natural result is achieved and that your appearance is not lost. Therefore, always choose Botox treatment from a specialist such as a cosmetic doctor or plastic surgeon. The treatment takes about 15 minutes and no anesthesia is necessary. Afterwards, the skin is somewhat red and swollen but this goes away in about 15 minutes. You can return to work immediately after treatment, as normally there are no visible signs you had any treatment. After a few days, the Botox begins to work and after two weeks the effect of muscle relaxing is optimal.

After treatment

There are rarely any side effects after Botox treatment. In case of swelling or pain, you can treat these areas with a cold compress but this is usually not necessary. After treatment, you can do just about everything again. We only recommend that you keep your head upright for the first 3-4 hours, and don’t exercise (including yoga), or use a tanning bed or sauna for 24 hours.

FAQ

It depends on the cause of the tension headache or migraine whether the treatment will actually help. Often it’s a matter of a try to see if it works for you. If they are purely hormonal migraines, botox treatment has no effect on them.

This varies from person to person. The more often you have already performed a toxin treatment the longer the effect often remains as well. Thus, the effect will often last around 3 months in the beginning and later it can stretch to 4-6 months.
