During a consultation with a plastic surgeon at our private clinic located in Maastricht, we’ll provide you with all the necessary information so you can make an informed decision.
Plastic surgery after extreme weight loss
Sagging skin on arms, legs or buttocks can get in your way, literally and figuratively. By lifting sagging skin and getting rid of fat deposits, you get a nice tighter skin. If your skin still has good elasticity, liposuction can be a beautiful and less invasive solution.
If you have a lot of excess skin around your limbs and buttocks, you can undergo correction for this at MOOI Clinic. Check in advance if this surgery is covered by your health insurance company. The consultation from A to Z
You come to MOOI Clinic in Maastricht to discuss your procedure. Write down your wishes and questions in advance so you can ask them at the consultation. During the consultation, you’ll speak with the plastic surgeon who specializes in removing excess skin around the limbs and buttocks about everything from general information on pre- and aftercare, to details such where scars will be. The scar depends on the amount of skin and, of course, the body part involved.
We will also take the photos for your medical records today. After the consultation, you will be aware of everything about your future procedure: from our honest advice about the expected outcome, risks, recovery and costs. We advise all our clients to quit smoking around the time of treatment. The same applies to the use of nicotine patches and gum.
An initial consultation involves a €50 consultation fee, which will be deducted from the treatment price.
The operation
Treatment takes place under general anesthesia at one of our hospitals. We mark off exactly how much skin will be removed. First, the fat is removed as much as possible with liposuction. After this, the excess skin is removed; the lymphatic pathways are spared so the risk of complications is low. The operation usually lasts 2 to 3 hours.
Aftercare and recovery
After an arm, thigh or buttock lift, you’ll stay in the hospital overnight. You may have some post-operative pain due to swelling and bruising. If the surgery goes well, you can go home after a check-up. Don’t drive yourself, but have someone else drive you home safely.
You’ll be given a compression bandage to wear around your arms/legs/buttocks day and night. This keeps the swelling down. After an arm lift, you can resume light activities after a week. After four to six weeks, you can move your arms fully again. Two weeks after treatment, we remove the sutures. Subcutaneous dissolvable sutures disappear on their own.
Scars may be red for the first few months, but this fades more and more. Do not expose scars to bright sunlight as the sun can cause them to “burn in” and therefore they remain more visible.
Result/expectation after surgery
The figure correction surgery improves your body contour. You can move better after surgery and will also leave behind certain discomforts such as blemishes or back pain. After about six months, the plastic surgeon can determine the final result of the correction. Additional surgery may be required.
Perfection certainly cannot be achieved. After surgery, you will have scars that will remain visible. In addition, the final result depends on several factors such as your overall health, the state of your skin, wound healing, etc.
Risks
With any surgery, there is a chance of bleeding, infection or impaired wound healing. This is usually easily treated. Given the size of the scars (in post bariatric surgery), there is a real chance that these problems will occur. In most cases, dressings are used until the wound is closed and no additional surgery is needed. The appearance of thick and lumpy scars, also called scar hypertrophy, can occur.
QUIT SMOKING
We advise all our clients to quit smoking around the time of treatment. The same applies to the use of nicotine patches and gum. Smoking not only makes you less MOOI on the outside, but also on the inside. If you smoke, you have a higher risk of complications such as poor wound healing, skin shedding or respiratory problems with general anesthesia.
