Since you’re considering this procedure, we would like to tell you what your options are and what steps you can take. During a consultation with a plastic surgeon at our private clinic located in Maastricht, we’ll provide you with all the necessary information so you can make an informed decision.
Plastic surgery after extreme weight loss
The lower body lift is particularly suitable for people who have lost a lot of weight. In this operation, a number of areas are corrected at the same time, both on the front and side and in the back.
If you suffer a lot from excess skin around your abdomen, buttocks and legs, you can undergo a lower body lift at MOOI Clinic. Check in advance if this surgery is covered by your health insurance company. If you’re reimbursed for treatment, we’re happy to refer you to the hospital. The consultation from A to Z
You come to MOOI Clinic in Maastricht to discuss your procedure. Write down your wishes and questions in advance so you can ask them during the consultation. During the consultation, you will speak with the plastic surgeon who specializes in removing excess skin around the abdomen, legs and buttocks. You’ll talk about everything from general information about before and after care, to details such as where the scar will be. The scar depends on the amount of skin and, of course, the body part involved.
We also take photos for your medical records today. After the consultation, you’ll be aware of everything about your future procedure; you’ll receive our honest advice on the expected outcome, risks, recovery and costs. We advise all our clients to quit smoking around the time of treatment. The same applies to the use of nicotine patches and gum.
An initial consultation involves a €50 consultation fee, which will be deducted from the treatment price.
The operation
The lower body lift takes place under general anesthesia. On the front of the body, a full lower body lift is performed in which the abdominal skin is completely detached from the muscle layer to the rib arch. Then all excess skin and/or fat at the bottom is removed. The abdominal skin is stretched downward and reattached. A new opening is made for the navel. While you’re still under anesthesia, you’re turned over so that the back and possibly the buttocks and sides are also lifted.
Aftercare and recovery
With a lower body lift, you will stay in the hospital for 2-3 nights. You also need to stay on bed rest at home for another 2 days. While on bed rest, you’ll receive injections to prevent thrombosis.
You may have some afterpain, especially if the abdominal wall muscle is also tightened. You’ll need a wear a belly band during the day and night for six weeks after surgery. This stops swelling and fluid accumulation. If necessary, drains provide drainage of wound fluid. These are removed after a few days. You may begin walking carefully, short distances in a slightly hunched posture starting on the third day.
After a lower body lift, you can return to light activities after two to three weeks. For the first two weeks, you should definitely not lift or do any physically strenuous work. You may possibly walk short distances and sedentary work is allowed. After six weeks, you can start exercising lightly. Two weeks after treatment, you’ll come for a check-up with your plastic surgeon. Sutures are removed and new suture patches are applied. Scars may be red for the first few months, but they will gradually fade. Do not expose the scars to bright sunlight; this can cause permanent discoloration. Hematomas rarely occur.

Good to know
As with any surgery, there is a chance of bleeding, infection or impaired wound healing with a lower body lift. This is usually easily treated. Given the size of the scars, there is a chance that these problems will occur. In most cases, dressings are used until the wound is closed and no additional surgery is needed. Around the scars, you may have numbness – this is normal and part of the procedure. The numb area will get smaller but will not entirely disappear. Most people are not bothered by this. Any small folds in the skin will disappear gradually over time.
Scar recovery can never be completely predicted. The appearance of thick and lumpy scars, also called scar hypertrophy, can occur. Sometimes a
scar correction can provide an improvement after a year.
Fat necrosis may occur which is the death of fat under the skin. This is especially common in clients with high body weight. In some cases, this can lead to infection and opening of the wound. Drainage and administration of antibiotics may also be necessary.
QUIT SMOKING
We advise all our clients to quit smoking around the time of treatment. The same applies to the use of nicotine patches and gum. Smoking not only makes you less MOOI on the outside, but also on the inside. If you smoke, you have a higher risk of complications such as poor wound healing, skin shedding or respiratory problems with general anesthesia.
