Smoker’s lines: treatment with fillers

Smoker’s lines are fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth that are associated with smoking. The wrinkles on the upper lip can be treated with fillers, which restore the volume and structure of the skin to reduce wrinkles. At MOOI Clinic, we work with several A-brand fillers to treat your smoker’s lines at our private clinic in Maastricht. We’re happy to advise you on choices and options for a natural result. What are smoker’s lines and how do you get them?

Smoker’s lines, also called perioral wrinkles, are fine lines and wrinkles that form around the mouth. These lines arise from the repeated movements of the mouth muscles and are exacerbated by loss of collagen and elasticity in the skin as we age. The wrinkles are associated with smoking, but also appear in people who have never smoked. Hereditary factors may also play a role in the appearance of lines above the upper lip. In addition, smoker’s lines can be caused by volume loss after dental treatment or too much sunlight.

What options are available to remove smoking lines?

There are several options to temporarily remove smoking lines. You can reduce the wrinkles above the upper lip with fillers as they restore the volume to reduce the fine lines. Botox can also be used to relax the muscles around the mouth, reducing wrinkles and lines. That is also the so-called lip flip. The effect of botox usually lasts about 2 to 3 months.

Another option is a deep phenol peel to make smoker’s lines less visible. Your skin texture improves with this deep peel and is also lifted and tightened subcutaneously, eliminating even deep wrinkles. Unfortunately, there is no surgery or facelift yet that can permanently remove smoker’s lines.

Quit smoking (if you smoke)

Quitting smoking is one of the best ways to reduce smoking lines. In fact, smoking can lead to an accelerated breakdown of collagen and elastin, accelerating skin aging and causing wrinkles and lines. By quitting smoking, the skin can repair itself and slow down the breakdown of collagen and elastin. It may take some time before you see improvements in your skin because the recovery process takes time.

What brands does MOOI Clinic work with?

At MOOI Clinic, we work exclusively with a variety of A-brand fillers to treat your smoker’s lines. Our fillers are of the highest quality. At MOOI we work only with temporary fillers, as advised by the Dutch Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Dutch Society of Cosmetic Medicine. The body breaks these down on its own within three to 18 months.

Most fillers consist of the substance hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring sugar molecule present in large quantities in our skin. Hyaluronic acid fillers are made of synthetic hyaluronic acid, which is designed to mimic the body’s natural hyaluronic acid. When hyaluronic acid fillers are injected into the skin, it acts like a sponge that attracts and retains water, improving the volume and structure of the treated area. Hyaluronic acid fillers are safe because our bodies break down the substance over time. At MOOI Clinic we work with the A-brands of fillers such as: Belotero.

The filler treatment

Smoker’s lines filler treatment involves injecting fillers to reduce fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth. The fillers help restore volume and soften the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles above the upper lip. This makes for a younger, smoother and more MOOI appearance. Treatment begins with a consultation with one of our specialists to assess your facial contours and discuss your desired results. During the consultation, we’ll tell you about the various filler options, risks and benefits of treatment.

The treatment itself usually takes no more than 20 minutes. The doctor will first apply a numbing cream to reduce the discomfort of the injections. Then the doctor will carefully inject the filler into the wrinkles with a thin needle to increase volume and tighten the skin. Smoker’s lines filler treatment is a relatively quick and easy procedure with MOOI results and the difference is huge. The effect of treatment with fillers is immediately visible.

After treatment

After treatment of smoker’s lines with fillers, you basically don’t need any recovery time and there is no pain afterward. In a few cases, bruising, some redness or minor swelling develops. These side effects are mild and disappear within a few days to a week. You may feel the filler during the first two weeks. But don’t worry, this isn’t visible and disappears after two weeks.

It is important to rest your skin for the first 24 hours after the after treatment. Try to avoid strenuous exercise, sunlight and the use of makeup on treated skin.

Beware of drinking hot liquids for the first two hours because the anesthetic is still present in the area around your lips.

Treatment of smoker’s lines with fillers gives MOOI results. You’ll have a youthful appearance as the lines of your lip are reduced.
