Tear duct fillers

The tear duct runs from the inner corner of your eye to your cheek. How noticeable your tear ducts are depends on your age and the structure of your face. Not everyone has obvious tear ducts, but if you do, we understand if this bothers you. In fact, deep tear ducts create an older and tired appearance. At MOOI Clinic, we work with several A-brand fillers to treat your tear ducts at our private clinic in Maastricht. Schedule a consultation with our cosmetic doctor.

Difference between puffiness and dark circles

Many people think they suffer from bags under their eyes. This is quite possible, but often puffiness and just slightly sunken eyes, or dark circles under the eyes are confused with puffiness. Bags look like moisture cushions and are actually a thickening of sagging skin under the eyelids. The puffiness actually makes your eyes look a little thickened underneath. Dark circles look more like dark grooves under the eyes, as if the skin is somewhat sunken in. The dark color may be hereditary, or it may develop over the years as the skin becomes thinner. The skin around your eyes is already very thin so you can see the blue vessels or the gray bony membrane of your skull through it. That’s what we call the tear ducts.

How do tear ducts form?

Everyone has tear ducts to varying degrees. If you suffer from sunken tear ducts or dark circles under your eyes, there are several possible causes. For example, stress, smoking, lack of fluid or fatigue. In these cases, addressing these can usually make the dark circles disappear on their own. But it’s possible that as you age, you may find that the dark circles won’t go away. This is mainly due to volume loss. In fact, as you age, skin aging occurs which means you make less collagen and elastin. Your temples also deepen and the layer of connective tissue under the eyes weakens. As a result, the tissue under your eyes may move and droop. All this deepens the hollow under your eye and creates more shadowing, leading to dark circles, or tear gutters.

Another reason for dark circles is hereditary. This means you have a natural predisposition to developing volume loss and thinner and more translucent skin under the eyes.

When do you use a filler treatment?

If you’re bothered by your tired appearance or eye look, you may want to consider a tear duct filler treatment. With a tear duct filler, we can easily counteract that loss of volume so that the tear duct becomes less visible. For this we use a hyaluronic acid filler. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in our skin and is also slowly broken down for these reasons. Fillers with hyaluronic acid are most commonly used in cosmetic surgery, and the effect of the filler also disappears after several months.

What brands does MOOI Clinic work with?

At MOOI Clinic, we work exclusively with a variety of A-brand fillers to treat the area under your eyes. Our fillers are of the highest quality. At MOOI we work only with temporary fillers, as advised by the Dutch Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Dutch Society of Cosmetic Medicine. The body breaks these down on its own within three to 18 months.

Most fillers consist of the substance hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring sugar molecule present in large quantities in our skin. Hyaluronic acid fillers are made of synthetic hyaluronic acid, which is designed to mimic the body’s natural hyaluronic acid. When hyaluronic acid fillers are injected into the skin, it acts like a sponge that attracts and retains water, improving the volume and structure of the treated area. Hyaluronic acid fillers are safe because our bodies break down the substance over time. At MOOI Clinic we work with the A-brands of fillers such as: Belotero.

The filler treatment

In tear duct filler treatment, a hyaluronic acid filler is injected into the area under your eyes. The fillers help restore volume and soften the skin, eliminating dark circles. This creates a younger, fresher and MOOI look. Treatment begins with a consultation with one of our specialists to assess your facial contours and discuss your desired results. During the consultation, we’ll tell you about the various filler options, risks and benefits of treatment.

The treatment itself usually takes no longer than 15 minutes. You’ll feel the injection a little bit, however, it’s not painful. This is because the filler also contains some anesthetic. The tear duct filler treatment is a relatively quick and simple procedure with a MOOI result. The effect of treatment with fillers is immediately visible, but the result is most beautiful after 2 weeks.

After treatment

After a filler treatment, you basically don’t need any recover time and there’s no pain afterward. In a few cases, bruising, some redness or minor swelling develops. These side effects are mild and disappear within a few days to a week. You may feel the filler during the first two weeks. But don’t worry, this isn’t visible and disappears after two weeks.

It’s important to rest your skin for the first 24 hours after the after treatment. Try to avoid strenuous exercise, sunlight and the use of makeup on treated skin. Treatment of the tear trough gives MOOI results and will eliminate your tired look.
