Performing under eyelid surgery is a minor procedure for our plastic surgeons, and takes only about 45 minutes. But we understand that it’s quite a big step for you. Puffiness or dark circles under the eyes
Puffiness and dark circles under the eyes are often misunderstood. Puffiness is “bags” created by excess fluid, fat or skin under your eyes. This can cause a thickening, a kind of cushion, under the eye. Dark circles on the other hand, occur because of thin skin under the eyes. Because of a lack of fat, the underlying blood vessels shine through, resulting in a blue-purple color under the eyes. Many people complain about the circles under their eyes and (wrongly) call this puffiness. There are a number of things you can do to reduce dark circles: consider getting enough sleep, not smoking, drinking enough water and living a healthy lifestyle. However, sometimes this is not enough to get rid of dark circles entirely, so this is where fillers can help.
When to have your puffiness removed?
Puffiness is often caused by aging. Due to accumulation of moisture or fat in the excess skin. When your skin starts to sag, it becomes droopy under the eye and this puffiness often begins to bother you. You look older because of the puffiness and are also frequently asked if you’re tired. This can be addressed with a simple intervention.
There is no ideal age for eyelid surgery. If you want to know if it’s a good solution for you, it’s helpful to make an appointment with one of our plastic surgeons. In consultation with you, the surgeon can determine whether it’s necessary, whether you can expect improvement and what the result of a treatment will be.
We remove puffiness under the eye during lower eyelid surgery, under local anesthesia. This procedure is performed in a treatment room at our clinic in Maastricht. For eyelid surgery that requires general anesthesia, we choose the operating room because it provides the safest setting.

The consultation from A to Z
You come to MOOI Clinic in Maastricht to discuss your lower eyelid correction. During the consultation, you will speak with the plastic surgeon who specializes in eyelid surgery about everything from general information on pre and post care, to the details of where the slit will be (usually neatly in the eye crease/lash line). In all cases, we provide a barely noticeable scar.
Sometimes it’s also possible to treat bags under your eyes in a different way. We can treat dark circles, puffiness and/or wrinkles with a filler, and/or a peel. This depends on the type of bags under the eyes. Our plastic surgeons will be happy to inform you about this. Photos will also be taken today for your file.
After the consultation, you’ll know everything about your future eyelid surgery. You’ll receive honest advice from us about the expected outcome, risks, recovery and exact costs. We advise all our clients to quit smoking around the time of treatment. The same applies to the use of nicotine patches and gum.
An initial consultation involves a €50 consultation fee, which will be deducted from the treatment price.
The eyelid surgery
Lower eyelid surgery is done under local anesthesia so you won’t feel anything. The plastic surgeon takes the excess skin away. There will be a small cut under the lash line from the eyelid to the outer corner of the eye. The scar is barely visible after healing. Treatment is tailored to each client individually so that we achieve the best possible results. This procedure takes about 45 minutes. Lower eyelid surgery is often combined with upper eyelid surgery, if you also suffer from overhanging eyelids.
If the surgery goes well and you feel good then you can go home immediately after the treatment. You’re not allowed to drive yourself so plan ahead how you will get home safely. Prior to your surgery, you’re well informed about our aftercare and recovery instructions.
Aftercare and recovery
Before the procedure, you’ll receive detailed post-operative instructions from us. It’s important for your own recovery that you follow these carefully. After surgery, your eyes will probably be swollen and blue, this is quite normal. You’ll be given a cold pack or ice goggles to reduce swelling. Also, use these regularly at home to combat swelling. After about a week you’ll come to the clinic for a check-up and we’ll remove the stitches.
You may not wear contact lenses for the first 2 weeks and no eye makeup for the first 3 weeks.
Most people take a week off from work. Keep in mind that it may take 3 months for your eyes to return to “normal”. The small scars only mature after 1 year. The color and thickness of the scar achieved at that point will likely remain. Protect the scars from the sun during this period.

Risks
With eyelid surgery, there is a small chance of bleeding, infection or impaired wound healing. Usually this is not serious. Sometimes the eyelid may pull a bit and this may take a few weeks to months to resolve. Occasionally, the eye cannot close completely but this is temporary. You’ll be given eye drops/ointment to prevent the eyes from drying out. Sometimes numbness of the eyelids occurs or some fluid accumulation develops. These symptoms disappear naturally over time.
QUIT SMOKING
We advise all our clients to quit smoking around the time of treatment. The same applies to the use of nicotine patches and gum. Smoking not only makes you less MOOI on the outside, but also on the inside. If you smoke, you have a higher risk of complications such as poor wound healing, skin shedding or respiratory problems with general anesthesia.

After the consultation with the plastic surgeon, you’ll know exactly what your eyelid surgery will cost. The surgical technique used, or your desire to undergo the procedure under anesthesia, may still affect the price.
